With Hurricane Sandy I not only lost electricity, food, heat, and hot water for 5 days - I also lost parts of my dignity, my sanity, and myself. I can now say that I have wandered the streets of New York City in complete darkness; I have strolled down Broadway in the pitch black. I have ridden a city bus packed full of people for over 5 hours just for a hot shower. I have had a complete emotional breakdown and an anxiety attack on the side of a street in Harlem. I have walked 4 miles, yes I said 4, just for a cup of coffee. I have gone 48 hours without a meal. However, I have also gained a new sense of resilience, patience, and survival. There is something about surviving a natural disaster that makes you a stronger person, and somehow I have come out of this knowing that I can seriously do anything. Between all of the excitement and anxiety and emotional breakdowns, I reminded myself that everyone I know fled the city at the first sign of problems. I remained. I toughed it out. I can now say that I am a Hurricane Sandy survivor, and I am proud of it. I am also proud of New York, especially of those who have lived without electricity, food, and water this week and of all of those who gave back to the community. During times of distress like this, you really see the kindness in people come out - like the family that ran an extension cord attached to a surge protector out of their front door to let the powerless charge their phones. Or the food trucks that allowed people to charge appliances and provided them with a hot meal. The people of New York have banded together during a time of crisis, and like always, they have come out stronger. This will certainly be a week that I will never forget, and I hope the world never will either. Let it be a lesson in kindness to us all.sandy | Tumblr Tumblr ihavethisblog I can’t even stop crying. I have never wished I had a time machine more in my life. This poor fucking mother. Sandy really revealed people’s natures in an overwhelmingly heart-breaking way. I saw the best in some New Yorkers during the hurricane, but I saw at least equal amounts of the horrifically evil. This is a whole new level but, jesus, this hurricane has just made me hate so many people here in a way I didn’t know was possible to hate. I have seen the most inexcusable lack of empathy and humanity in far too many people over the last week. If there had been any less softness and good from some, I would have lost my faith in people entirely this week. I have been repeatedly shocked and disgusted with the majority of New Yorkers during this hurricane and through out the recovery process so far. Thank the multiverse for bodega owners, good-spirited bus drivers, a few random strangers, food cart workers, ConEd technicians, and all the other people with incredible hearts who have done much of the heavy lifting for a lot of the hurricane recovery and still managed to be upbeat and kind. Thank you to the few who have revealed kind hearts and open arms. If you are someone who prays or sends out good vibes or whatever, please send them all out for the families who have lost loved ones due to Sandy and especially for this couple who lost their children because people chose to be horrendously selfish demons. It is a strange thing to be spending my days, this week, in a place of so much beauty and tranquility: a small village in Provence, while so many friends, and a few million of my fellow Americans, are struggling without power, heat, transportation , or the ability to connect with those they love. It will do nobody much good for me to forego the croissant and the Luberon wine, in solidarity, but I would like to make a small offering here, to those who are dealing with so much.

I can't donate electricity, or water, and I can't replace your trees, or your roof, or your car. This has to do with the single thing that--more than any other--has served me during my own most challenging times, which is the telling of my own story, in a way (I always hope) that will make it possible for someone else who has not walked in my shoes to better understand what it might be, to do so.
